This thesis by Michelle Bell discusses the effect of the mother's emotional state upon the newborn infant as well as the long-term impact of extended hospital stays in the context of premature births. 

This article is important to those of us with kids with CF for two reasons:

1. The impact of early, extensive medical procedures can impact the bonding and attachment process which can result in emotional and behavioral challenges down the road.

2. The mother's emotional state upon CF diagnosis, especially with a newborn, is a key factor on the child's social and intellectual long-term development.
