Foster W. Cline, MD, a child psychiatrist, and Jim Fay, an educator, founded the Love and Logic Institute, Inc. in 1977. Love and Logic is a philosophy of raising and teaching children which enables adults to be happier, empowered, and more skilled in their interactions with children. This in turn leads to emotionally healthy children who have self-control, a high self-image, and the ability to cope with life’s frustrations with a positive attitude.
The concepts behind the Love and Logic philosophy address basic human needs. These needs encompass inclusion, structure, control, and affection, and exist in all groups and cultures. Love and Logic places a heavy emphasis on respect and dignity for children, while teaching adults how to set limits and maintain appropriate control. Love and Logic is a way of working with children that preserves loving adult/child relationships, teaches children to be responsible, and prepares young people to live in the real world, with its many choices and consequences.
Years of experience and research support Love and Logic’s strategies for working with children. The Love and Logic approach captures powerful, time-tested psychological techniques, and incorporates them into easy-to-use parenting tools which produce immediate results because they are simple, practical, and easy to learn.
Every year, Love and Logic changes the lives of hundreds of thousands of families and educators worldwide, who attend classes and use the multi-media products. School systems across the nation have adopted Love and Logic’s curriculum for educators. Both Jim and Foster have written several books, including the recently revised Parenting with Love and Logic and Parenting Teens with Love and Logic, which are among the nation's best-selling parenting books. Jim Fay’s video, How to Discipline Your Kids without Losing Their Love and Respect is shown on PBS stations across the country.
